Whether you need to restore a tooth, anchor and attach a dental bridge, or complete a dental implant, dental crowns are perfect for the job.  Let’s take a look at how a dental crown may be used to repair a smile that is experiencing any of the following dental conditions:

Worn Down Tooth

First, a worn down tooth may be caused by a variety of factors. Even though tooth enamel is the strongest material in your body, your teeth can still be worn down. This may happen if you constantly grind or clench your teeth (bruxism) which wears down tooth enamel and can cause teeth to fracture over time. Molars are particularly vulnerable to this as they do most of the heavy duty chewing and masticating of your food.

Next is acid erosion. This is a condition which also weakens tooth enamel with time. You may experience hollows in the tooth along with worn down biting edges and tooth surfaces. Erosion may occur by eating and drinking acidic foods and beverages, and medical conditions such as bulimia and acid reflux.

Large Dental Filling

Dental crowns can reinforce and strengthen a tooth, while a filling, at least a large one, may compromise the structural integrity of a tooth, and possibly make it more vulnerable to fracture. In a case where a tooth’s decay covers more than half of the width of the tooth, a dental crown will restore the tooth’s function and appearance while avoiding further damage

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

What does it mean when you feel pain upon biting down while eating your favorite food? This may actually indicate a cracked tooth. Cracked tooth syndrome is where small cracks in a tooth may or may not show up on an X-ray, or cracks in a tooth under the gum. You see, chewing can exert pressure on the fracture lines and create pain. When a dental crown is placed on the tooth, the stress on the fractures is distributed evenly and relieving your tooth pain.

Root Canal Procedure

A root canal is often followed with a dental crown to restore the tooth. Placing a crown after decay is hollowed out of a tooth helps prevent the tooth from cracking further.
