If you are expecting a baby, congratulations! It is a busy time for you, buying baby clothes, keeping your doctor’s appointment, getting the nursery ready and of course picking out a name!
But have you seen your dentist?
Seeing our dentist before the baby comes will give you a chance to take care of your cleaning and exam, or have minor dental problems fixed which will give you less to worry about after you become a parent. It is safe to see our dentist for routine dental issues, and because you are more prone to gingivitis while you are pregnant, it might be a good idea to have an exam and a cleaning during your first and third trimesters, just in case. It is also safe to have dental X-rays while you are pregnant, and our dentist can give you an apron and thyroid collar to protect your baby from the radiation, if you are concerned. If you have a dental problem that needs to be addressed, the safest time to do that is 13-21 weeks into your pregnancy. Cosmetic procedures can wait until after the big day.
As for your home care routine, you should continue to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. When you see our dentist, Dr. Scott Howe for your exam, ask him if he has any areas of concern and if there is anything you should be doing differently.
If you are pregnant, or planning on conceiving, and you live in the Salem, Oregon area, you can call 503.370.7651 to make your appointment at Riverfront Dental LLC.
